What Exactly Is an “Enrolled Agent”?

You might be wondering—what does that title mean?

An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally licensed tax professional who’s authorized to represent taxpayers directly before the IRS. To become an EA, a person must pass a rigorous three-part exam administered by the IRS that covers individual and business tax laws in depth.

 Think of it this way:

  • A CPA (Certified Public Accountant) may handle accounting, audits, and taxes—licensed by a state.

  • An EA focuses exclusively on taxation and is licensed by the U.S. Treasury, giving them unlimited rights to represent clients in all 50 states.

So, if you’re dealing with the IRS—whether it’s a tax return, an audit, or a resolution—an EA is your go-to tax specialist.
